The newly formed Healthcare Coalition for the North Country is “a nonpolitical, volunteer coalition of active and retired healthcare professionals, caregivers, business and community leaders, Medicaid recipients, and other concerned citizens.”

The Coalition states, “Our mission is to preserve access to Medicaid for all deserving recipients. While there is always a need to identify and eliminate fraud and abuse, we also need to preserve healthcare through Medicaid for people in need who qualify by current standards. Our Coalition formed because we believe it is essential to preserve vital healthcare resources in our region as Medicaid funding reductions are being considered.”

In St. Lawrence County, 19,866 people were on “Medicaid Standard,” with another 33,562 on Medicaid through the Affordable Care Act. These plus other categories show that 31.6% of the county population benefits from Medicaid.

Cuts to Medicaid will also severely impact health care workers, hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and other businesses that rely on federal funding.

If you, a family member, friend, or neighbor will be affected by cuts to Medicaid, please call Rep. Elise Stefanik’s office in Ogdensburg at 315 541-2670 and voice your concern.
